M1 Hold Old Georgians To 2-2 Draw

26th March 2022

By Colin Pike

Surbiton Men came from 2-0 down to hold Old Georgians to a 2-2 draw at St. George's College on Saturday night.

The draw means that Old Georgians must wait another week for their first ever Premier Division title as Wimbledon are eight points behind Old Georgians with three games to play following their 6-1 win at East Grinstead.

Old Georgians were well on course to clinch the league title after thirteen minutes as former Surbiton player James Tindall opened the scoring in the third minute from open play with Sam Ward doubling the hosts advantage in the 13th minute from a penalty corner.

Surbiton struck back twice towards the end of the first half, Gareth Furlong converting penalty corners in the 29th and 33rd minutes to restore parity.

Neither side could find the winning goal in the second half as Old Georgians failed to compete the treble over their near neighbours having won 2-0 at home in November and 5-1 at Sugden Road in February.

Holcombe beat Hampstead & Westminster 4-3 in the other Top Six match.

In the Bottom 5, the relegation battle, now restricted to the bottom team being relegated following England Hockey's announcement on Friday, took another twist as Durham University beat Beeston 1-0 whilst the University of Exeter drew 2-2 at Oxted, meaning Exeter return to the bottom on eight points with Durham on ten. Brooklands Manchester University are now safe.
