Women’s 4s 3 - 1 Spencer 3s (H)
By Charlotte Gallagher
When you have a bye week in the season there is only one thing to do on it - have a wedding that would otherwise struggle to fit from September to April without taking out several players from several teams within Surbiton! The party confirmed several things we already knew: Em is actually 85 years old, choosing hot chocolate or Sherry as her tipple of choice, Bing is the Queen of compilations with a simple pair of red sunglasses and Scar as great in red as Sian and Lisa look in green! What we didn't anticipate was a Herbstyler resurrection - attempting to drink the bar out of sambuca and maybe being one of the only other people to truly appreciate the Blue WKD at the toasts!
If it therefore seems that my memories are full of this wedding and not full of hockey facts, you'd be correct.
Spencer started brightly, moving the ball around quickly and avoiding the middle of the pitch - this is my first inkling that they may have had some inside knowledge from our latest Sloth GK recruit. Whilst we were put under some pressure and not being allowed meaningful or sustained possession, training then well and truly paid off. Against the run of play we nicked the ball and launched a speedy and brutal counter-attack that culminated in the classic Bingaling finish in the corner. Smash, Bang, Wallop!
This seemed to instantly dim Spencer's light as they started to play through the centre and thus lose the meaningful possession they had enjoyed in the early minutes. Whilst we moved the ball around with more confidence we won our first short corner. You could see the realisation dawn on Carole - Bing and Charlotte both on the sideline, a free pass for the top of the circle option and boy did she make the most of it with a low drag to the corner. Kapow!
Going into the second half with a two goal lead was comforting but not quite to the levels of recent weeks. More to do. We had the possession, we had the chances, we could not quite break through again... until... Herbstyler, put away for another year, broke through as 'My name is Bex' and boy did she hit the ball as if she meant it - the keeper could only get half a hand to the ball, it pushed her hand clean away and rebounded into the back netting. Boom! The only blot on the day is that we were caught napping and also being a touch too attacking in our formation and one ball did worm its way through and under Ava, who otherwise did the little she was required to with ease.
Take aways - We know that turning up 30 minutes late can, on occasion, help you to a POM performance, you still get colds when you don't drink properly (might as well have had the Blue WKD Em), being anywhere near Jane will get me votes, blue paint does come off (little disappointed we didn't have Smurfs on the pitch), and we remain in second place but have the best GD.
