SHC Sirens 3 - 1 Old Cranleighan 7s (H)

Gameday: 24th January 2026

By Charlotte Coltman

Oh, hello there dears! Sit down, have a digestive biscuit - no, take the one with the chocolate, you’ve earned it! What a lovely Saturday afternoon we had down at the Sugden Road grounds. The sun was peeking through, although the wind was bitter, and the lights were low.

Our Surbiton Sirens ladies put on quite the show against the visitors from Old Cranleighans. It was a 3-1 victory, and I must say, the girls looked simply marvellous in their kits.

The Goals (Or as I call them, the "Exciting Bits")

The Sarah Show: Young Sarah was like a whippet today! For her first goal, she took the ball at one end and just kept going - I thought she might run right out the gate and into the car park! But no, she popped it straight in.

A Bit of Magic: Then, she did it again! A "one-handed" goal, they called it. In my day, we used two hands and a prayer, but Sarah made it look like she was just waving hello. Absolute magic.

The Double-Act: Our third was a lovely team effort between Tessa and Laura. It was so polite; they practically shared the goal. It’s nice to see them sharing; my grandson could learn a thing or two from them.

Stars of the Pitch

We had some new faces today from B2H, which is always lovely. Natasha and Pia made their first appearances for Sirens. Pia is such a strong girl in the middle of the pitch - very "no-nonsense," reminds me of my sister Agatha when she’s spotted a sale at the garden centre. Tasha was learning as she played and she played well.

A huge "thank you" to Sarah S and Zoe for joining us and helping out, running hard and fast. Annie also worked her wizardry in the goal and kept us on the winning straight and narrow.  It’s that sort of community spirit that keeps the world turning, isn’t it?

A Narrow Escape and a "Yellow" Situation

The moment of the match had to be Hayley’s save. The ball was practically over the line - I’d already started writing "Goal" in my little notebook - when she swooped in and cleared it! My heart gave a little flutter, I can tell you.

Oh, and a funny thing happened with Wendy, our umpire. She asked for a different coloured ball - bless her, she probably thought the white one was hard to spot against the daisies - but the request was denied! We carried on with the standard one, and she did a smashing job anyway.  Thanks also to Dave for 'keeping his end up' and issuing stern orders to the oppo when required. Great support and encouragement from Kate, Claire and Claire.

Final Thoughts

It was a well-deserved victory and a wonderful team effort. The Old Cranleighans girls were a bit inexperienced, bless their hearts, but they played with such spirit. But our Surbiton ladies were just that little bit more "on the ball" today.

We move up to the dizzy heights of 8th in the League!

Now, has anyone seen my reading glasses? I’m sure I left them by the orange slices.

POMs: Tessa and Sarah
