Women’s 6s 2 - 0 Wayfarers 5s (A)

Gameday: 25th January 2025

By Niamh Wilson

Buckle in folks - I’m back again for my fourth match report this season. Getting Ellie, Zoe, Millie and myself there 40 minutes late probably wasn’t the best start (personally, I blame Millie), and due to these unfortunate circumstances I’m unable to comment on the warm-up  - but I’m sure it was top tier.

We were pre-warned that the flood lights turned off at 6pm sharp, so weren’t feeling too positive when we started nearly 20 minutes late. You can also imagine us jumping for joy when we were informed that our umpires had never umpired before. However, I think the biggest shock was Skipper Sammy starting up front?! Hello Mrs Forward, welcome back!

The game started and Surbie immediately got stuck in with some excellent runs and tackles, really holding our own. Marlijn made some amazing saves, with Sinead and Fee helping with clearance. You can always count on Kirst and Tish to get the ball up the pitch too and once up, we had Becky and Millie running all over the shop - made me tired just watching. Our forwards were not giving up though, eventually allowing Lila to score a lovely goal with a perfect assist from Lizzie. A few tumbles here and there (whoops) and it was half time. 1-0.

Half time was a race against time with the need to finish before being plunged into darkness. Kieran gave us a motivational speech, reminding us to be louder on the pitch, as the only people he could hear were Marlijn and Sinead telling us to pass. And Mark! Who’s Mark you may ask? Turns out he meant ‘mark the players’. I think that’s why I am writing this match report.

Second half started strongly. Both teams wanted the victory. Hatchy was on fire, consistently getting the ball into the D, with Zoe and Rosie showing some great offence. Finally, another goal - this time from Millie slipping it nicely into the bottom left corner. 2-0. The last 10 minutes were intense with shot after shot and breakaway after breakaway, but unfortunately (or fortunately) to no avail for either team.

Finally at just before 6pm, the full time whistle went and at last, a win for Surbi 6s. Good going ladies, we definitely deserved that!
