Supra League Wins for Wrens and Eagles

Gameday: 2nd March 2025

By Mark Rogers

GU14 National Supra League Round 2

In a sport looking for superstars, the promoters needed to look no further than Round 2 of the GU14 National Supra League, with the Eagles on the road at Spencer and the Wrens hosting Reading.

GU14 Eagles 4 - 0 Spencer HC (A)

The Eagles had the early push back, and facing a resurgent Spencer side whose own place in the Supra League was richly deserved. The weather matched the sunny outlook of the teams as the Eagles set about from the off with their usual high intensity pressing game. Hockey historians will look back on this game as a routine 4-0 win, with a goal each from Charlie and Maya and a brace from Gemma split equally over the two halves. However, that assessment would fail to do the Eagles justice as they bounced back into league action with a comprehensive and commanding performance.

GU14 Wrens 4 - 1 Reading (H)

A short hop down the A3 to the Surrey borders and the Wrens faced a Reading side which had been undefeated all season. Perhaps still recovering from leaving everything on the pitch in their cup win at Knole Park the preceding Sunday, the Wrens raised their fans’ anxiety levels to an unacceptable level as they went into half time at a goal apiece. Eva’s well struck opener was cancelled out by a great solo effort from the visiting forward, outpacing the Wrens’ defence before slotting the ball under the diving Poppy. Normal service was resumed after the break, as the Wrens’ superlative passing game clicked into place before Lizzie’s wonder strike and goals from Eva and Gracie put the game beyond doubt.

The results left both sides topping the table with six points each from two games, and they go into the international break well placed before the Supra League resumes at the end of March with the Wrens visiting Stourport and the Eagles away at Guildford.
