By Izzy Yonge
In an intense matchup, Surbiton faced off against Sevenoaks in a gripping field hockey game that ended in a 3-1 victory for Surbiton. The match was filled with excitement, dramatic moments, and a few unfortunate injuries.
Early in the game, the atmosphere was electric as both teams fought for control. However, the mood shifted dramatically when Izzy Yonge suffered a painful injury after a ball was flung at her. The impact was jarring, leaving her on the ground in visible pain as medical staff rushed to her side (an ice pack was thrown on the pitch).
Sevenoaks seized the opportunity and executed a quick counterattack that led to their first goal. A well-placed hit on goal from their forward sent the ball sailing into the net, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Surbiton, however, were not discouraged. They quickly regrouped and pushed forward, earning a corner that would prove pivotal. Autumn Brown stepped up to take the corner and delivered a powerful drag flick that found the bottom left corner of the goal, levelling the score at 1-1 and reigniting the spirit of the Surbiton side.
As the match progressed, both teams had their chances to take the lead, but Surbiton found themselves struggling to convert. They eventually capitalised on a short corner, Noa Armelin received the ball and placed a well-timed shot into the net, restoring Surbiton’s 2-1 lead. The match grew increasingly physical as both teams became frustrated. A couple of bad tackles marred the flow of the game; one particularly reckless challenge by a Surbiton player sent a Sevenoaks defender tumbling to the ground.
As the match neared its conclusion, Surbiton struck again, sealing their victory with a third goal that left Sevenoaks unable to recover. The final score of 3-1 reflected Surbiton’s clinical finishing and effective set pieces.
In the end, the match showcased the intensity and unpredictability of field hockey, leaving players and fans eager for the next encounter…
