Women’s 4s 1 - 1 London Wayfarers 3s (H)
By Chloe Lee
Despite assisting with an early goal, a controversial call that gave Chloe a green card lead to the team “rewarding” her by nominating her to do the match report.
Much like the changeable weather which brought baking sun, rain and the threat of thunder to Pitch 2 the W4s saw moments of brilliance peppered with a number of near misses against the constant threat of Wayfarers 3s. An early goal fed from the wing to Chloe was beautifully slotted into the goal by Jen.
Putting Wayfarers on the back foot brought an urgency and new intensity to their game, leaving our very able defence of Sunny, Scarlett and Bessie to work overtime to maintain our 1-0 lead at half time. None of which would have been possible without the calm, cat-like reflexes of Lexi in goal.
Despite spectacularly defending numerous short corners the inevitable goal from Wayfarers came just over half way into the second half bringing us level at 1-1.
The remainder of the match saw some great breaks from both teams but neither team was prepared to concede a goal. Some brilliant interceptions and steals from Lianne, Charlotte Stacey, Evie and Sophia and numerous great carries down the left and right wing from Emily, Aoife and Chantelle gave the spectators hope of another goal but it wasn’t to be.
Tension mounted following a ball to the head of Jen. But our defence remained composed with Bessie stopping the ball almost on the line after Lexi made another great save preventing a further goal from being conceded.
I think everyone was relieved when that final whistle blew.
