GU16 Rovers 3 - 0 Cheam GU16

24th January 2024

By J Woods

The Rovers were a few players down on a full-strength squad, but they set their sights on winning ways again. Saran, Eliza, and Ilsa returned to the team, and everyone lined up in their usual positions.

From the start, it looked like Cheam was keen. Both teams went toe-to-toe, but there was nothing to show for it. As half time approached, both defences were heading for a shut-out. Saran wasn't having any of it and set her sights on Cheam's goal. She found herself on the edge of the D and unleashed a powerful shot. Cheam's goalkeeper did well to save but couldn't control the clearout. Molly pounced for a pure poacher's goal, and it was 1-0. Minutes later, Imogen W-R flashed in a cross from the right. Molly was on hand for another successful strike. The half time whistle blew with the score 2-0 in favour of Surbiton.

The second half played out much like the first, with not much give from either side. Eliza was proving to be a handful for the opposition and could have scored. Cheam was still in the game. The defence of Ilsa, Francesca, Sophia, Isla, with Scarlett at goalkeeper had to be alert. It was a much different Cheam team that lost 9-2 at home in the reverse fixture.

Surbiton continued to make some bright surges. On the right, Imogen W-R was finally getting the better of her shadow. She put in some useful crosses and on another day, Molly could have had a hat trick. A nice one two between Eliza and Imogen W-R and the cross came in. This time it resulted in a much-deserved goal for MVP Eliza. Surbiton could finally relax. Surbiton saw the game out. The win was complete with a satisfying clean sheet.

The final score was 3-0 in favour of Surbiton.
