GU14 Wrens Continue Impressive Start to Season

Gameday: 13th October 2024

By Mark Rogers

GU14 Wrens 14 – 0 Hampstead & Westminster (H)

Round 2 of the League brought Hampstead & Westminster on the long journey south (of the Thames) to fortress Sugden Road as the Wrens looked to build on their impressive opening day win the preceding week.

Taking Will’s advice seriously to beat the opponents in the warm up, the Wrens came close to doing that with Captain Elsa’s 32 laps of the car park meaning that it was touch and go whether the visitors would be able to get to pushback on time as the traffic piled up.

The blood was pumping through their legs as the Wrens did the one thing that no Surbiton team has ever done before – start strongly – with Eva slotting in a goal in the opening minute, finishing off a fabulous passing move from Rosie’s start. Nerves settled, the Wrens got to work opening up both flanks with Izzy C, Hattie and Grace – the latest products from Tarek’s U12 conveyor belt of talent – leading up the left, and Tileena, Lizzie and Izzy J causing havoc down the right as the goals went in.

Decked out in fabulous pink – the best that South West London is likely to see this season - the Hampstead team fought bravely and strongly, never giving up and making sorties in the Wrens half. However, each effort was caught up in a bird’s nest of a defence with Emily, Darcey, Isla, Erin and Amelie picking off the attackers and launching wave after wave of counter-attacking passing from one end to the other. The visitors’ efforts deserved a consolation goal but Poppy’s outstretched right kicker put paid to that in the dying seconds.

All eyes turn to the Cup next weekend, with the Wrens making the return trip to Hampstead.
