Women's 2s 4 - 2 Southgate 1s (A)

9th October 2023

By Izzy Yonge

Through fanfare and flares Surbiton Women’s 2s took to the pitch looking to secure a three game winning streak.

After a well fought first quarter, Surbiton found themselves 1-0 up. Having been awarded three short corners in a row, we finally went ahead when a flick from Noa A was expertly deflected into the goal by Harri B.

In the second quarter we had plenty of opportunities from the forwards with well coordinated attacks and shots from Amie H, Charlotte C and Amelie C. After a debatable decision in our defence Freya was asked to take a seat for a couple of minutes by the umpire.

Following Will’s inspiring half time team talk we were ready to take to the stage again. Against an organised Southgate defence Amie found the roof of the net putting Surbiton 2-0 up. What an amazing goal!

An attempt at a tackle in the D from Izzy Y resulted in a flick being given to Southgate, ironically her efforts for a goal-saving tackle resulted in Southgate’s next goal, bringing the score to 2-1.

Some end to end and determined attacking play from Surbiton saw a couple of the opposition being awarded green and yellow cards for their defensive efforts.

Some exciting hockey led to our next goal with an amazing aerial into the D from the half way line by Maelona R that rebounded off the keeper to Hannah D who put it away with ease scoring on her reverse to make it 3-1.

A short corner was awarded in the final minutes, Amie H calmly stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, 4-1.

A questionable few moments saw a determined Southgate attack from which they scored bringing the game to 4- 2 final score. Player of the Match was Amie H.

Not our prettiest performance but still a very good win. The goal scoring will continue next week…
