Sparticans 6 - 2 Epsom Mustangs (H)

16th January 2023

By Simon Fitch

Scorers: K Grant (3), M Sutton, Iffland, Bell

It was an enjoyable run out for the Sparticans on Saturday resulting in another three points against a spirited Epsom team. The rain had disappeared and captain Skippy delivered clear messaging to the guys before the start – do our job well and success will follow. He also picked himself at left back for the first half, which was interesting.

We started strongly but managed to concede against the run of play. Soon we equalised as Matt Sutton swept the ball into the far corner. This should have calmed us down but once again we gave away the ball in midfield and they scored again. Heads did not go down though and after a passing move, Steve was fouled and stepped up to take the resultant stroke. His finish justifiably won him Moment of The Match and, thanks to our growing number of spectators, can be seen on our twitter feed. It was a brilliant stroke and took us to the break level.

More words were exchanged at half time and they worked. From the first minute of the second period, we robbed them in midfield and after a flowing move, including a deft deflection from Matt S, which we should acknowledge, the ball fell to Kev five yards out. For the goalkeeper’s health we were all relieved the shot eluded him and was buried into the backboard to put us up.

We turned it on for the next 20 minutes and 3-2 deservedly became 6-2, though we had to ride some luck as Epsom continued to bring the game to us. Kev scored another two and the captain, now restored to his familiar central midfield role, finished a corner in a manner we’d been trying to execute throughout the game, honest.

Slightly frustratingly we didn’t add any more goals in the last few minutes, with open goals and other chances going begging but we made our way for a lengthy debrief comfortable in a job well done. Kev deservedly won Spartican of the Day, teas were excellent and we were able to thank some of our Sparticans supporters over a drink before retiring to the bar.

Every good game needs good umpiring and we’re grateful to David and Peter for controlling the game excellently and facilitating the fun we had. We march on…
