Sirens 1 - 3 Old Cranleighan 6s (H)
By Jenny Melbourne
In a thrilling encounter on the hockey pitch, SHC Sirens found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline against a resilient OCs team. The match, which unfolded with high intensity and strategic plays, showcased the competitive spirit of both sides.
The Sirens lineup, featuring talented players such as Hayley, Kate, Hannah, Claire J, Suz, Nao, Monica, Sarah, Jax, Jo, Louise, Rosie, and guarded in goal by the very capable Sophia, fought valiantly throughout the game. Four fabulous B2H ladies did a great job in supporting a slightly depleted team due to injury, illness and Christmas events. Despite some great play down the wings and coordinated efforts from the back up to the forwards, OCs managed to capitalise on opportunities and secure a lead early on.
Claire emerged as a shining star for the Sirens, managing to find the back of the net and securing a crucial goal for her team. The Sirens faced a formidable OCs defense that ultimately proved too challenging to break down, alongside some young legs in midfield that jinked and danced towards the goal. We finished the first half at 3-1.
Suz, displaying exceptional skills and determination, was rightfully named the Player of the Match. Suz's stellar performance on the field underscored her commitment to the game and leadership within the team. This was despite her lack of understanding of the rule to go back half way if you break the line to early in a short (it earned her a DOD nomination).
After a team talk at half time from Tracey, reinforcing Tarek’s coaching tips, the second half was a more even game and both teams attacked and defended well.
The match was a testament to the competitive nature of hockey, with both teams showcasing skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. As the season progresses, fans eagerly anticipate more thrilling performances from the Sirens and confident that the team will learn from this experience and return even stronger in future matches. Bring on the second half of the season!
