Magnets 2 - 1 Old Kingstonians O50s (H)

16th January 2023

By Mark Waller

Scorers: Beaney R, Jackson

This was not a great team performance. But, after such a long gap since we last played, this was perhaps not a great surprise. And with so many players in the squad we looked disjointed and uncertain at times, not helped by some very lazy and half-hearted play.

To be fair, OKs played well; their basics and organisation were far better than ours on the day. Our first half performance was dreadful and we gifted OKs the softest of goals very early on. With their greater application and better ball management they took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half saw something of an improvement and we finally strung some passes together. But more often than not the passing was hesitant and several promising attacks broke down because of our mistakes and lack of vision. When we did get it right we scored two decent goals without reply and held out for a hard-fought win and three more points. Had Frosty not pulled off several top-class saves in the final minutes it could so easily have been a different story. However, if we play this badly and win we cannot really complain. It may have been ugly, but we maintained our 100% win record and stretched our lead at the top of the table.

Thank you to Tony and Craig for umpiring. We do appreciate it and it was nice to hear our opposition make complimentary remarks about them both after the match.
