Double Delight for Sparticans to Bring in 2023

9th January 2023

By Simon Fitch

Sparticans 6 – 1 Ashford (Middlesex) 3s (Home, League)

Sparticans 3 – 1 Knole Park 1s (Away, EH Club Championship)

The new year started well for the Sparticans as the team came back with a bang over a rare double header weekend.

First up were Ashford in the league game postponed from before Christmas. 6–1 possibly flatters us slightly and this was a well fought game, but the Goals, Goals, Goals came aplenty after a solid 2–0 first half. Kev scored a hat trick, with Steve, Skippy Bell and Kieran, impressing on his return to the team, all scoring one.

It was a pleasure reacquainting ourselves with our superior teas, and over the debrief, Moment of The Match was awarded to Kev, and Spartican of The Day for the first time to new player Dan, thoroughly deserved after a very solid performance.

Our game in the Cup against Knole Park was also postponed in December’s freeze-fest, and eventually it was agreed it needed to be played on Sunday. A very unusual Sunday game decimated availability, seemingly though for both sides, and the team took the journey to Kent with a mixture of established, old and new Sparticans in the ranks. Thank you to all who played with such aplomb in a game we deservedly won.

In awful conditions, against a strong team we held our own in the first half and then almost fulfilled Kev’s 4–1 prophecy after scoring two good goals just after half time. But after a last ditch goal line clearance we had to settle for 3–1. Given the circumstances, it was extremely commendable to have the team go back to the, or a, pub to start the thawing out process and to award Cormac Spartican of The Day for a great two goals.  And to bring the tea into teas.

And so we start the year on a high. Thanks to all our umpires over the two games, to our many players and also to Wardy and our very own Uncle Albert, founder of the Sparticans Ronnie Whelan for supporting on Sunday. It’s good to be back…
