Thank you to our umpires for the game. It was also the first time that we have had to clear a hired pitch before we could use it!

Selection rolled around the decision to make a trio of various styles of attack was laid on the way to the ground only to be crucified by a text message that destroyed it on arrival – so back we went to the past. Only this time we intended 4-4-2. And unbelievably it sort of worked for 34 minutes – by which stage we should have been two up as we were actually playing quite well but we went 0-1 down.

The second half was a total difference with some players working really hard and some with lost concentration. We conceded again then we did have a very healthy period of about six minutes but to no avail.

Chelmsford were pretty social in the bar afterwards but it did show the difference on and off the pitch of having a group of men who had known each other for considerable time. But they gain from being “provincial”!
