Sparticans Secure League Title on Final Day

25th April 2022

By Simon Fitch

Sparticans 4 - 1 NPL 1s

Scorers: Iffland (2), Grant, K (2)

The Sparticans clinch the trophy, at last…

It was a day of extreme joy for the Sparticans on Saturday as we won against a spirited NPL team and clinched the points needed to bring a final league trophy, the London Men’s Division 6 South West crown, to Sugden Road this season.

Now needing only a point for the championship after recent draws, Surbiton started brightly and made chances from the beginning of a game. Slowly and surely the goals went in, but not before Save It Lee had to, well do exactly that on a number of occasions, and Matt Anderson at sweeper made enough crucial interventions to earn himself Spartican of The Day, ensuring that the wood-carved beauty would be on his mantlepiece for the summer.

We had 15 Sparticans playing on Saturday, three more (Luke, Toby and Eugene) watching and one more (Ravvers) thankfully umpiring us to his high standards. Alumni Ciaran and Levi came to support on a great day in the sun.

Captain Fitchy had, not surprisingly, arranged a fitting celebration at the end of the game with the Sparticans Cup making another welcome appearance. It really wouldn’t have been the same if we’d won the league at home at 4pm in early April, or on Merton’s sandpit two weeks ago. We then reconvened at Selfish Steve’s house for our season debrief before watching Kev receive the club’s golden stick award at the End of Season event – which we rather enjoyed.

Our Young Spartican of The Season was Toby, well done on a fantastic first senior season. Moment of The Season was the Grant 1-2-Smash goal. Spartican of The Season, after an unprecedentedly close vote featuring seven nominees, was Kevin with his 31 goals.

This was a triumph two years in the making after 2020/21 was curtailed and the leagues were restructured. Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved. Aside from the 19 in the team photo, several others played a handful of games this season, and without them we’d have lost points and, with it, the league. Thank you to these players, and also to all our umpires who have controlled our games so well this year.

This was a great season, finished with a superb Sparticans day out. Over and out.
