Ladies 5s Hold On for Win Over THD

7th March 2022

By Emily Hughes

Ladies 5s 2 – 1 Tulse Hill & Dulwich 2s

After a couple of strong team performances the last two weeks, the L5s were determined take the full three points from our game this week. Our first leg against THD didn’t go to plan, with them taking all the points and taking some of our players out at the same time. A dislocation and triple fracture might have stopped Ruth playing for the rest of the season, but it’ll take more than that to keep her off the sidelines as manager extraordinaire.

The warm up went smoothly, with the team remembering to open the gates and let the chickens have a runaround, before shooing them back in and closing the gates behind them. You can sleep easy Emma.

Coach Winter kept the team talk short and simple: press as a team and have fun. And that is exactly what we did for the first half. Rock solid defending, with Simmi showing her skills in defence, as well as driving down the line and even finding herself at the top of the D threatening to shoot. We had great communication and were moving as a team, which led to numerous breaks and a few short corners won. On two occasions the initial shot wasn’t converted, but we didn’t let the ball back out out the D, won the rebound, calmly moved the ball round the defenders, and found Rosina in her favourite spot right in front of the goal ready to smash the ball in the net! 2-0 up at half time and spirits were high.

We knew THD would come out fired up and hungry to turn the tables in the second half, and that is exactly what they did. They were ready to pounce on any mistake we made, intercepting a number of balls and getting a quick break. Catching us unawares and getting a little disorganised, they pulled back to 2-1 and piled the pressure on. We did manage to get another few good breaks, with Rosina looking extremely threatening, but couldn’t quite get another goal in. Safe to say there was a collective sigh of relief when the final whistle blew and we held on the to the win.

POM: Simmi for great work, tackles and passes

DOD: Emily, for colliding with their keeper (in my defence, she was getting in the way when I way trying to score)
