Ladies 5s Finish 2021/22 Season on a Win

12th April 2022

By Ruth Fraser

Ladies 5s 4 – 1 Sunbury & Walton Hawks 1s

It was the last game of the season in the beautiful spring sunshine. The Ladies 5s wanted to finish it with a win.

Chloe was captaining the side and gave the team a motivational chat - enjoy, play our game and win!

The game started with Surbiton putting the pressure on Sunbury’s defence straight away. After a few deflections from their keeper Emma scored our first goal. This was a great start to game after five minutes. Surbiton were dominating play and had many a scoring opportunity. But Sunbury were putting up a fight. We saw some lovely triangle passes and the ball being moved around lovely at the back. Sunbury then had a few breaks, but our defence, Amy, Chloe, Sunny Amelie, and Lily kept them goalless.

The second half started, and our game plan was to move the ball around at pace. We saw some great runs by the midfield, Shakila and Mimi. Then Amber picked up the ball and scored a beautiful, stunning goal.

Sunbury came back fighting and, on the break, slipped past all our defence… they were 2 on 1 with our keeper and scored. Surbiton weren’t going to let this goal stop us and we put on the pressure on. We had lots of attempts on goal from Rosina, Emilia, and Emma but it just wasn’t going in. Then a mistake from their keeper saw a deflected ball land in front of Ruth, and she slapped it in, goal!

The game was back and forth for the last ten minutes, and Surbiton had a few short corners but couldn’t convert. We changed the next penalty corner when Mimi slipped the ball to Ruth and with a straight strike, we had another goal.

Final score 4-1 to Surbiton. Great team effort and a fabulous end to the season!

POM: Amber for all hard work, distribution, and the amazing, fabulous, worldly goal (that I missed).

DOD: Ruth for forgetting her astros and reporting the incorrect score line to our absent captain. I missed Amber’s amazing goal…. Sorry Amber x
