Ladies 2s 0 - 2 Canterbury 1s (A)
By Ellie de Heer
Surbiton Ladies 2s travelled to Canterbury for their second game of the 22/23 season. After a frustrating draw the previous week, Surbiton were looking to get back to their winning ways. Despite a long and difficult journey (maps was saying that at this point, it was a six hour drive to get home), Surbiton started well, with some free-flowing attacks and clever midfield play. There were few shots on target for either team and the first half finished 0-0.
The second half proved to be a feisty affair, with Canterbury resorting to some questionable defensive techniques; it mostly consisted of swinging hopefully at Surbiton sticks and shouting ‘stick block’ whenever Jess Dyson got on the ball. The umpires seemed quite OK with this. The deadlock was broken by Canterbury just at the end of the third quarter, who scored off a short corner.
The fourth quarter started in a similar vein, with turnovers from both sides. Surbiton took their keeper off with six minutes to play, looking for an equaliser. However, a last-minute corner awarded to Canterbury saw them go 2-0 up with seconds left on the clock. It was a disappointing result for the L2 who await their first win of the season. Surbiton play Wimbledon away next Saturday.
Player of the Match goes to Lottie Ross and DOD was awarded to Charlotte Calnan for liking the smell of deep heat slightly too much.
