9th January 2022

By Colin Pike

Surbiton Ladies finished the first weekend with maximum points in the Super Sixes Division One after winning all four games at Telford.

Surbiton had beaten Harleston Magpies 4-1 and Sevenoaks 6-2 on Saturday and continued their winning run on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Guildford and an impressive 7-0 thrashing of the University of Birmingham.

Surbiton will go into the second weekend at the University of the West of England in Bristol with a three point lead over both Sevenoaks and Clifton Robinsons in their quest for a top two finish and promotion back to the Premier Division after being relegated in 2020.

In their first match against Guildford at noon, Surbiton were quick out of the traps, Maddie Long opening the scoring in the first minute.

By half time, Izzy Petter had scored twice to give Surbiton a 3-0 lead, but the remaining goals came in a three minute frenzy towards the end of the match.

With four minutes remaining, Kerryn Swanepoel pulled a goal back for Guildford, only for Long and Petter to both score in the 37th minute to extend Surbiton's advantage to 5-1.

Swanepoel struck for a second time in the 38th minute but there was no further scoring.

However, in the penultimate match  of the day, Guildford ended Clifton Robinsons' unbeaten record with a 3-2 win.

Immediately afterwards, Surbiton were on fire against the University of Birmingham, who included former Surbiton player Emily Powdrell in their squad.

Petter added another hat-trick to take her tournament goal tally to ten goals, three ahead of Clifton Robinsons' Livvy Hoskins. Petter struck in the 3rd, 13th and 22nd minutes, with Beckie Middleton scoring Surbiton's second goal from the penalty spot in the eighth minute as Surbiton took firm control.

Long scored Surbiton's fifth goal in the 30th minute with Steph Elliott getting her name on the score sheet with three minutes to play and Middleton completing the scoring a minute later.

Next weekend, Surbiton take on Reading and Clifton Robinsons on Saturday before finishing against Cambridge City and Gloucester City on Sunday.
