Sparticans Victorious Over PHC Chiswick

20th September 2021

By Simon Fitch

SHC Sparticans 4 – 1 PHC Chiswick M5

Scorers: Sutton (1), Fitch (2), Iffland (1)

The Sparticans returned to winning ways on the show pitch on Saturday in a good game against a competitive PHC team. Team selection was an interesting experience this week, with mass unavailabilities leaving us short. Into the breach stepped Student Sparticans Barney and Austin, and Future Sparticans JJ and Dirk to form a strong squad for this game. Dirk’s upgrade from umpire to player was facilitated by Andy umpiring us – thank you for that and for keeping control so effectively.

We started strongly and a theme quickly emerged – great approach play with less great finished product. A significant factor throughout in this was the PHC keeper doing his best Harry Gibson impression for the afternoon. Despite a stellar performance by SHC luminary Paul Caine in defence, their keeper was comfortably their player of the game today.

We eventually broke the deadlock with a Fitchy trademark bobbler being tucked in by Matt, who saw plenty of action up front. 1-0 was a disappointing half time score and our half term convention resolved to do the same, only better. We scored a second after a great start but then conceded a stroke. Pleasingly, that was the last time they threatened and our attacking play was rewarded as Fitchy and then Selfish Steve, with the goal of the day with his new stick, got us to 4-1.

Another happy debrief in the Marquee of Dreams followed. We wished the students a year filled of fun and Wetherspoons in Nottingham over their jug, and enjoyed the outstanding match teas and the somewhat understated return of Tusker, fine fare indeed.  Steve’s finish deservedly won Moment of The Match, and Fitchy, to his obvious delight, was finally awarded Spartican of The Day.

Richmond away next week and another tough test to look forward to.
