Ladies 5s Lose Out in OCs Derby

30th November 2021

By Emma Chandler

Ladies 5s 1 – 4 Old Cranleighans 1s

In what can only be described as Baltic conditions the mighty 5s faced OCs 1s. We started off with a great team warm up including opening and closing the gate before sweeping the chickens… those poor chickens were left in their pen all afternoon!

As my brain is still thawing from the freezing temperatures this report shall cover the game to the best of my memory!

We started the game strongly making some great attacking drives down the wings. After some good counter attacks by the opposition, they won a short corner and put us down 1-0. The defence stayed strong after some more solid attacks from the oppo with Marlijn saving shot after shot! Unfortunately they succeeded in winning another short and scored again putting us 2-0 down going into half time.

We started the second half with a lot of fight to get a goal and the win – Emily and Rowan made some great attacking plays out to the wings and Evie and Mimi both made some great breaks down the sidelines. Special mention to our new recruit Amelia for dribbling all the way from our 25 to the D! We tried and tried to break through their defence but OCs stayed strong, except for one of their defence who Evie clattered into 2022. Having got the ball into the D on one occasion I managed to step on a defender’s stick and fell directly onto the ball, gaining me DOD – yes, it still hurts to sit down!

After a great break down the right we won a short and after coach Billy had drawn out their positioning we executed a great left slip which although didn’t get a goal on the first attempt, we got another short! A direct push out to the left back to Emily and bang we got our goal! 2-1 to OCs. With some great defensive play we held OCs off for a while but they managed to win yet another short and scored off a very well executed routine.

Their final goal came from open play meaning we finished off with a 4-1 loss and a lot of frozen fingers and toes!
