Sparticans Disappointed With Draw

20th January 2020

By Simon Fitch

Sparticans 3 - 3 Trinity Mid-Whitgiftians M3

Scorers: Iffland 2, Grant 1
Spartican of The Day: Andrew Bell

A disappointing two points dropped for the Sparticans in a dramatic game in the Croydon environs. On a fresh day, with the pitch partially frozen in places, we started badly – very badly – and conceded two early goals. After that initial shock, we steadied and began to gain the upper hand, and deservedly pulled a goal back – and eschewed a fair few other chances in an eventful first half.

Part II had it all – another goal for TMWs took them two goals up. We again rebounded and pulled one back. We then gained a correctly awarded stroke, from one of our many short corners and saw Selfish Steve unleash his trademark power flick to get us to parity.

The action was not complete, however, with TMW 3s scoring from a short corner, courtesy of a well-worked routine finished by their returning first teamer, who Andrew marked extremely well throughout. However, one of our opposition clearly entered the D prior to short corner being taken and thanks to some good umpiring teamwork, the goal was disallowed. We then had a number of chances, hit the post twice and thought we had stolen the three points with the last hit of the game – only to fall foul of the same rule, and a draw it was.

We returned to burgers and chips and cheered up eventually. Back on home turf next weekend and hopefully a return to our winning ways...
