M2 Smash Eight Past Richmond

2nd March 2020

By Max Anderson

Men's 2s 8 - 0 Richmond M2

‘Better with Petter’

After a frustrating draw last weekend to Southgate away, which saw Coach Creed struggle to count to two the team were eager to make sure he was certain of the result this week. So much so, Bird even missed a netball game to play (although he does miss Sunday’s game due to netball).

As it was a home fixture Coach Creed was present – unlike some of the forwards, although you could argue that some of them weren’t present last weekend despite taking to the pitch. Captain fantastic Bartram was on a coffee date with his new girlfriend – finally he was able to trap a girl, if only he could trap those aerials Beaumont keeps delivering on a plate to him. Redders decided that after playing hungover last week he wouldn’t do it again... so he missed the game and went to a party instead. This meant we were a little short up front, but we had James Evans who the previous week had made his sweetest connection all season, unfortunately it was hitting the oppo’s shin pad with his stick in rage! Billy moved up front and worked so hard he missed the last five minutes of the game to run to the shops to buy a packet of cigarettes.

We needed a bit of youth to supplement the two old ‘wise’ heads upfront, up stepped Will Petter. Petter was making his debut for the 2s and he certainly wasn’t phased by it, scoring a brilliant hat trick. Not bad for a 15 year old – Redders and Bartram have serious competition. Beaumont and J Evans decided not to upstage the teenager and only scored two each and therefore both owe a jug, which they will buy at the next home game, to Mr Baker’s delight.

The game finished 8-0 to Surbiton, but could have been a few more. S Evans was brilliantly denied by the Richmond goalie, the goalie didn’t actually touch it but he did enough. Max ‘I don’t need a mouth guard’ Anderson was also guilty of missing an open goal. Anderson playing in the unfamiliar position of high midfield also picked up a yellow card for his troubles. Luckily for him he wasn’t able to stay around for teas and isn’t playing in the cup match on Sunday so escaped DOD. And as Beaumont turned up on time, Coach Creed knew the score and Haycroft kept a clean sheet naturally DOD went to S Evans.

POM should have been a straightforward one as well but Petter wasn’t able to stay for teas. Therefore attention turned to the solid defensive display from Adam ‘Army’ White, a well-deserved winner in Petter’s absence. The boys travel to Oxford next weekend, hopefully someone will wash Linnel’s kit, there will be no netball games and Petter is available!

Scorers: Petter x 3, Beaumont x 2, J Evans x 2, Winter
POM: Adam White
DOD: Scott Evans
