Men's 2s in Pre Season Action

13th January 2020

By Glyn Jones

Men's 2s 1 - 2 Guildford M1

The boys played Guildford 1s on Tuesday night in a ‘friendly’.  Although they went down 2-1, it was a great work out with lots of chances created and positives to take away.

Olly Witts got the Surby goal with a trademark PC to level the scores at half time. Both goalies made a string of fine saves to restrict the final score line (Mark Haycroft - playing despite a bad back).

Guildford are pushing hard this season to return to the national league, lying second in South Prem 1 at the mid-season break, a point behind London Wayfarers.

It shows our side are not too far from being competitive in the league above if we manage to get promoted. The first league game will be a very different challenge against Staines who sit on top of South 2 West.

When we played them away in our first game of the season, they used the pitch to their advantage and made it hard to generate ball speed and pace in our game.

On Saturday 4 Jan, we hosted Reigate Priory, Epsom & Richmond 2s in a Surrey Cup round robin at Sugden Road. A 0-0 draw with Reigate and 2-1 win over Richmond were enough to secure qualification, before defeat by a very organised and experienced Epsom side in the last game. It means qualification for a semi-final (probably vs Wimbledon 2s) later this season.  A highlight was that it gave an opportunity for debuts by a number of youngsters including James Cake and Dylan Parry, who acquitted themselves very well.
