Last Minute Drama for the Sparticans

26th October 2020

By Simon Fitch

Epsom HC Mustangs 2 - 2 Sparticans

Away, Therfield School

Scorers: Grant (K) - 2

Either a point saved or two lost this week, depending on your viewpoint (ours was probably the latter) at a windy and rainy Therfield under the lights.  Selection was interesting with the squad of 42 becoming 14, with three defenders, and one Assistant Gaffer who came to ensure we didn’t win without him (thanks Steve).

In a competitive game, for the second week the Sparticans had the majority of the attacking play, and were unlucky to find an Epsom goalkeeper in fine, fine form – unlike last week most of our shots were on target, aside from Fitchy Junior’s attempt to put the ball in the adjoining netball net.  We played ok without being great, and were unlucky to be undone by a couple of short corners, one of which became a flick, which went beyond Save It Lee.

Having initially gone ahead, we found ourselves staring at another defeat when, with the last play of the game, our top goalscorer absolutely rifled home a short corner.  Whilst we could certainly have won, Epsom were good value for their point as we’re sure they reflected on in the growing gloom when they dispersed, and we retired to the Plough’s car park with its white van selection, and an importantly large gazebo.

There we reflected on the quality of the crisps and pints, and congratulated Mr Welch on winning the inaugural Moment of The Day award, oooh he smells nice, followed by Lewis being awarded Spartican of The Day for moving to the back line and performing like he’d been there all his life, or maybe should have been… his position as the new Chris Baker utility back may well be cemented.  We look forward to returning to our own gourmet match teas next week…
