12 Goal Game Goes in Sparticans' Favour

24th February 2020

By Simon Fitch

Sparticans 7 – 5 Kenley M2

Scorers: Iffland (2), Grant K (2), Fitch, Morris and Curtis
Spartican of The Day: Kevin Grant

A difficult week selection wise for Captain Chaos Curtis, with the 52 available from two weeks ago reducing to ten for yet another trip to Warlingham School, citadel of Croydon hockey. We brought Mike Pocock out of retirement, and welcomed Seth and Joe from the U14s to their first game of adult hockey. All three performed very credibly, and the boys should understand that not all games are like this one…

We started very strongly and were 4-0 up after 20 minutes, and deservedly so – it could easily have been eight at that stage in proceedings, with wave after wave of attacks making inroads into Kenley’s D. We then had a very poor spell, where Kenley came back with two goals – and these could have been four.  At half time we discussed our Jekyll and Hyde performance and then pretty much repeated it during a second half that must have enthralled our four spectators.

We turned 4-2 into 6-2 fairly early in the second half, then it was 7-3 and eventually ended at 7-5. A deserved victory, and one largely devoid of rancour despite the Gaffer’s best attempts right at the end. Once we’d had confirmation of the score it was back to the hills of Kenley for some of the team, where over double teas of jacket potatoes and pizza, we decided that this week Mr Bell could not be anointed Spartican of The Day, though we were very grateful that he joined us, and instead it would be Grant, K, who won the accolade. And then back to Sugden Road for the Men’s 1s and a further debrief in more familiar territory.

Thanks to all who played, and to the umpires for their efforts in an enjoyable day out for all concerned.
