(National U16 Championships 3rd Place Playoff)

7th April 2019

By Colin Pike

Surbiton’s Under-16 Boys missed out on bronze medals at the Junior Club Championships at Wakefield, going down 3-2 to Canterbury in the third place playoff.

Surbiton led 1-0 at half time, Olly Witts scoring in the 23rd minute. Henry Brett equalised for Canterbury from open play in the 29th minute before Witts restored Surbiton’s lead in the 33rd minute from a penalty corner.

Within two minutes, Brett joined Witts as having scored twice in the game, again from open play with the winning goal coming from the penalty spot, Callum Brown-Lea converting in the 42nd minute.

Witts had the consolation of finishing the tournament as the top scorer with eight goals.

Bowdon, who pipped Surbiton to a place in the final by narrow goal difference, beat Fareham 4-2 in the final to lift the trophy.
