Reading Supervets Too Strong for Magnets

13th November 2019

By Mark Waller

Magnets 1 – 4 Reading Superveterans

Scorer: Beaney R

Player of the Match: Ian Broderick (GK)

Another tough fixture this week, against the team top of our league. As is usual for any Reading Masters side, they fielded several very experienced players who worked well as a team; nothing too showy or fancy, but enough guile and tactical nous to know how to stretch us at the back, building on swift counter-attacks from defence. Unfortunately, we were unable to handle the high press and overlaps, and when we were on the offensive too many of our promising attacks broke down due to misplaced passes. Despite having a few decent chances ourselves in the first half, we went into the break 3-0 down, which potentially could have been worse had it not been for another MoM winning performance from Ian in goal.

The second half saw a slight improvement. As Reading tired we started to find a rhythm and to build up some promising attacks, one of which eventually brought about a good goal from Richard Beaney. On a day when we needed to be a lot sharper, this was not our finest outing. But, credit to the side for keeping the scores even in the second half. We remain fourth in the league, with a game in hand over the teams above us.

Special thanks to Simon Aldous and Ray for umpiring, especially for keeping the lid on one particularly tempestuous battle in midfield.

This was our first fixture against Reading for some years and it was gratifying to hear some of the positive comments from their Captain and others who complimented the club on its recent successes, vibrant atmosphere, improved facilities and excellent hot teas.
