Mongooses Take Big 9-0 Win
By Matt Sabben-Clare
Mongooses 9 – 0 Horley M3s
Buoyed by watching the Cobras complete their win against Cheam, the Mongooses stepped out full of confidence against Horley. Or at least, we would have done if Horley had been there. Our opposition (bar a single player) had gone to the wrong pitch … but eventually we were relieved to see their convoy of cars arriving at Oaken Lane, with five minutes to go to push-back.
We might have to think about skipping the warm-up more often: we were straight into our stride, with a good, tidy passing game. Horley did threaten from time to time with long passes from the back and pace out wide, but our well-organised back four had a solid outing, snuffing out these attacks. The half-time score of 2-0 to the Mongooses was probably a fair reflection of the balance of play, although we might have had more if we’d been more patient in the last third of the pitch.
After the break, the Mongooses stepped up the tempo and were more clinical in front of goal. In a remarkable final 20 minutes, we added 5 goals to the 4 already on the board. It says something for this team effort that 7 players ended up on the score-sheet. That should take nothing away from the excellent contribution all round the field, including at the back. On a different day, this apparently routine win could have been a lot closer than the scoreline suggests.
Thanks to Alex and James for umpiring very well.
