M6 Sneak Past Cheam

22nd October 2019

By Simon Jackson

SHC Men’s 6s 1 – 0 Cheam M2s

Player of the Match: Ben Hanson

The mighty sixes trundled on to their 3rd league win from 4 to send us to the dizzy heights of 4th in the Surrey Premier League, meaning only another 3 teams to go until we are crowned the best team in Surrey, or at least in this league!

The truth is we have probably played the teams who will occupy the bottom half come the end of season, and we were by no means convincing in our latest 1-0 defeat of Cheam. Having said that we have ground out a couple of results of late which has become a hallmark of recent seasons, and with the perfect blend of youth (read ‘fitness’) and experience (read ‘old’) we seem to be able to both disarm and dismantle the opposition at the same time. Full marks go the Colts in providing a high energy performance that this week resulted in effervescent Ben slotting home a scrappy goal before Corney Jnr made sure on the back stick, luckily after the ball had crossed the line so the goal stood, but only after Corney Snr had stepped in to alleviate the umpires of having to make an awkward decision.

The senior moments were mainly at the back in the shape of Toddy and Big T standing firm against a lively Cheam attack albeit lacking in a finishing touch, and in Campo up front showing the youngsters how to get on the end of a well worked short corner. Though it was less Concorde and more Tiger Moth in its execution (one for the real SHC oldies that one…).

Like last week we dug deep in the final minutes and clung on to a one goal win, and will gladly take the points that made the defrosted Scampi taste all the fishier.

Thanks to Sam Corney for a sound debut to the left of his father (already more passes completed son) and to George for excellent umpiring in the face of mediocrity from the opposition.

A very well deserved Man of the Match performance from Ben Hanson who put in a fabulous all round display and scored the winning goal.
