Ladies 7s Slip to Narrow Oxted Defeat

2nd December 2019

By Ali Quinn

Ladies 7s 2 – 3 Oxted L2s

‘No lighty, no likey!’

A 45 minute delay due to no key for the lights didn’t put us in a very good mood. It was a chilly evening and Oxted were our close rivals in the table so it was always going to be a close match.

Our mix of colts was expected to give us an extra inch of pace. Mobility Bray was in for a tough time but she’d upgraded her batteries in preparation.

We always knew it would be a battle and a scrappy match. We pushed forward early and a neat finish from Crazy Legs gave us the lead. We were marking well and holding the midfield despite the coughs and sneezes in the team. However, their lone striker who held her position in the D had one chance and managed to flick it past GPS Annie.

1-1 was probably fair at that point but we went again and threw the crèche on up front and a great team goal gave a brightly coloured headband and Niamh a simple finish at the far post. 2-1 and half time was welcomed.

The temperature started to drop and a slippy pitch meant injury concerns. We were winning and needed to do more of the same.

Unfortunately this didn’t go to plan as within the first ten minutes of the second half Oxted’s midfielder, who was streaks ahead of the others in terms of ability, quite literally waltzed, Strictly style, through our defence not once but twice and scored. She had missed a few up to that point so only scoring two was a bonus.

We tried our best to get back to parity with GPS Annie keeping us in it as well as Sammy and Chenghai marshalling us out of defence and keeping us on the front foot.

A frantic last 15 minutes as the colds started to fatigue us and even the colts lost a bit of their extra inch of pace. Sadly it wasn’t to be.

A frustrating afternoon and no teas to discuss the match and console ourselves with - a 3-2 loss which should have been better.

Thanks to…

Mobility Bray for umpiring and upgrading the batteries.
