L7 Win Against Wimbledon

13th November 2019

By Ali Quinn

Ladies 7s 1 – 0 Wimbledon L6s

After a good luck from “Ton up Twiggy” we were buoyed with enthusiasm for our game, though as the rain started pouring before our 4pm push back we were not looking forward to it.

Struthie’s pink leather gloves were out and Mobility Bray had her hood up. Gandalf had a last minute gum shield malfunction after lending it to her son… the things us mothers do!

It was still raining when we pushed back but we were immediately on the front foot – our midfield general was in position #allaboutme and our setup was not to concede. The show pitch never fails to cause a bit of pinball, but it was to our advantage as we managed to move the ball around well and get a few chances to miss the target… Ms Fraser!

We were a bit fraught at the back and in midfield, but we had the calm of GPS Annie to keep us in line. It was a hard fought half and a last minute penalty corner for Wimbledon had us slightly worried on the side line.

Our coach, Tarek did the half time talk which involved pink and orange balls and a white one… one comment from a team member was “…I’m a bit lost here…” – Lily come back, all is forgiven.

However, we did listen to his points and set up better in the second half. Mimi has decided she is the new Sugar Plum Fairy with her raised hands and spinning – she had some strong challenges in midfield and was under pressure from the slightly more experienced Wimbledon players but she stood strong as did Crazy and Maisie up front chasing balls and running at defenders. Ms Fraser was still off target despite being played through with an amazing pinpoint accurate ball so we were looking more likely that someone would nick a goal in the last minute.

We were still playing pinball in the midfield and the back as well as trying to remember who we were marking. Strong and stable GPS Annie meant we had a clean sheet.

A last minute award of a penalty corner was all we needed – we went through our repertoire... Benita special, slip left, slip right and ultimately we scrabbled a goal after a scrap in the goalmouth. Our Golden stick winner put one home again. A 1-0 well deserved victory for a tenacious team.

A big thanks to Birthday Girl Bray for umpiring.

Captain Seddon for the usual selection nightmare.

#allaboutme because I can

Debs for an amazing birthday cake

Ms Fraser - the 6’s can have you back if you are going to miss that many!

Our player of the match GPS Annie who was awesome in goal and had a clean sweep of votes but please never let her guess your age!
