L2 Beat Team Bath 4-1 To Keep Four Point Lead In Conference West

9th November 2019

By Colin Pike

Surbiton Ladies' second team kept their four point lead at the top of the Investec Women's Hockey League Conference West after a 4-1 home win over Team Bath Buccaneers.

Surbiton have the advantage over four teams including Clifton Robinsons' second team after their fifth win in six league games.

After their disappointing defeat at the University of Birmingham a fortnight ago when they went down 1-0, Surbiton made a quick start, Issy Carey putting them ahead from open play in the third minute.

Team Bath Buccaneers equalised five minutes later when Sally Fenton also scored from open play, but Surbiton went into the half time interval 2-1 ahead after Pippi Spawforth restored their lead in the 27th minute.

Surbiton had to wait until the 54th minute to extend their lead, Carey scoring her second goal of the game from the penalty spot with captain Hannah Denison completing the scoring four minutes later.

Surbiton start next Saturday's (16 November) national league triple header when they host bottom club, the University of Bristol at 12 noon. Bristol go into the match with one point, but Surbiton will not take anything for granted after their defeat at Birmingham, the West Midlands club securing their only win of the season so far against the league leaders.
