Mixed Social Hockey Add Extra Tuesday Session!
By Barry Bartram
Our Mixed Social Hockey group will be running two morning sessions a week from October…
There are not many times when a Great Britain international will be on the same sports pitch as a newbie, and both can enjoy the game, but the mixed social hockey sessions Surbiton hosts every Thursday morning are one of them, and sometimes the novice gets the upper hand.
The sessions started in September last year, and have attracted a wide profile of ages and abilities, with the emphasis on fun rather than competition. The highlight of the ‘season’ so far was the New Year’s Eve special with many family members and friends also joining in the fun.
And now, with attendance numbers climbing rapidly, from Tuesday 6th October we are going to be running an additional session from 10.00-11.00am.
Andy Western reflects on MSH below:
“I played for Wales and GB in the 1970s and 80s. For a whole host of reasons I didn’t touch a stick for around 30 years. I was wanting to try playing again but was very very rusty. Back to Hockey was great but I really needed another stepping stone before that and thanks to Mixed Social Hockey at Epsom, I had a perfect way of getting back to playing. I am now back playing for my country in Masters Hockey, and now that MSH has come to Surbiton, I have become a regular on a Thursday and really love it. I also found I could help those people who were keen to improve their game. It has been great to see how those players have improved week by week. I can’t say enough about how enjoyable Thursday mornings always are. I would encourage anyone to join in.”
In addition to the game session, we also work hard on the other aspect of social hockey, which works especially well now in the re-vamped clubhouse; namely post session refreshments and putting the world to rights!
Whatever your level or experience and whatever you enjoy about hockey you can find it in Mixed Social Hockey at Surbiton HC. If you are a relatively inexperienced player you can find people who can help you improve if you want to and make sure you are always fully involved in the games. If you are a more experienced player, Mixed Social Hockey is a perfect setting to try out new skills or hone old ones.
So if you’re ‘working from home’, working flexibly or simply no longer working, come and join us for some gentle exercise and socialising
