Eleven Surbiton players Set for Paris 2024 Olympics
By Surbiton HC
With the Paris Olympic Games less than a month away, a fantastic summer of international hockey is set to continue following the recent conclusion of the 2023/24 Pro League.
Six SHC players have been included in the GB men’s travelling squad for Paris, with M1 captain Dave Goodfield, drag flicking specialist Gareth Furlong, defensive dynamo Nick Park and homegrown talent Conor Williamson all set to make their Olympic debuts. Tim Nurse and GK James Mazarelo have also been named as travelling reserves for the men. It’s also great to see former SHC junior players Zach Wallace and Will Calnan selected for an exciting men’s team who are well placed to fight for a spot on the podium.
GB Women will take five Surbiton players to Paris. Double Olympic medallist Giselle Ansley will go to her third Games, with skilful attackers Hannah French and Izzy Petter looking to add to their bronze medals from Tokyo. Defender Amy Costello and W1 Player of the Season Sophie Hamilton will play at Olympic level for the first time following stellar domestic seasons. It’s been a tough Pro League campaign for the GB Women, but with a history of delivering at the Olympics in recent times, they will still hope to challenge for a fourth consecutive Olympic medal.
As always, excitement for those selected is set against huge disappointment for those who haven’t made the squad this time around. We are hugely proud of all our SHC players who have given their all in a testing cycle of centralised training at Bisham Abbey.
