B2H – What’s on Next Pt 1:
Monthly 7s Tournaments
By Roger Hitch
Our main aim last season was to introduce a greater concentration of competitive situations and from this, under the organisation of Josh, we held a monthly 7s Tournament for seven months fielding two teams of our own, with visiting teams from London Royals (an LGBT club) and Epsom HC. It was a great success and with our continuing membership strength, the Dragons took the title with a tournament to go, receiving an engraved silver trophy which is proudly displayed in the clubhouse porch.
With the explosive interest in B2H from before the start of this season with 38 enquires so far and 12 already joined, our monthly tournaments, referred to as our ‘Ts’, have taken on a different look as we are now able to field three teams of our own, reducing the visiting teams we can invite from two down to one. This is due to the pitch allocation times on a Saturday morning where we have P3 from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
With interest in our Ts from other clubs including Tulse Hill & Dulwich HC, Old Cranleighans HC and possibly Merton HC, we are inviting our visitors in rotation to try to fit them all in. With an increased number of strong new members who wish to remain in the B2H group, we are heading in the direction of dominating the T, something that was not in the original plan, so we are now having to look at trying to get our stronger members to move up to the league sides, not only for their benefit by giving them a better class of match, but to reduce our overall skills back down to the B2H development level and enable more new members to fill the gaps and take part. We are anticipating having one hundred members by the end of the season.
This Saturday 28th September, we are holding our first T, showcasing our own Dragons, Griffins (who were called Wolves but the women’s section has collared that name now!) and our new third team called the Sirins. Can you guess what is common about these names? Come along and see us in action. We have two umpires from our own ranks, one of whom is player/umpire Gary Robinson, and from the umpiring pool we have Giles Reynolds. Thanks to both for controlling the games.
Next week’s article is entitled “B2H – What’s On Next Pt 2” where will look back on our trip to Holland earlier this year and see what new events are in store for B2H this season.
