England GK James Mazarelo Signs for SHC
By Surbiton HC
Surbiton HC is pleased to welcome goalkeeper James ‘Maz’ Mazarelo to the Men’s 1s squad for the 2022/23 campaign.
Maz has long been seen as a goalkeeping star of the future and has built on his extensive experience in the GB EDP programme with his first senior England cap earlier this year. He will be brimming with confidence after quickly gaining more international experience during Pro League fixtures over recent months. He joins from Loughborough University and will be another fantastic addition to a strong defensive unit for the M1.
Maz says, “After a fantastic three years at Loughborough, I want to play at a club where I will continue to enjoy my hockey and be competitive. Joining Surbiton and fighting for a European spot and the Premier League title will be a great challenge. I also want to go somewhere with a strong club community that supports its junior players. I look forward to being a part of that challenge, and I cannot wait to start next season.”
Head coach Mark Pearn has been aware of Maz’s ability for several seasons: “Maz shone as a 15 year old playing indoors against us for Bowdon many years ago, and it was apparent even then that he had all the attributes needed to become an outstanding player. It has been a pleasure to track his rise to the GB team, and there is no doubt that he will make us significantly tougher to beat. I love his attitude towards hockey and know that Surbiton will provide the positive club environment that is so important for him.”
Welcome to SHC, Maz!
