Clubhouse Corner: 1st September 2021

1st September 2021

By Ann Bedford

Welcome back!

Have we really been away? While you’ve all been “sunning” yourself on the Costa Del Devon the club has been in full swing with preparations for the new season. Thank you to every single one of you that helped keep the club functioning and running safely during the “weird” days of the last 18 months.

FOOD & DRINK

This weekend we welcome all club members back for your Play Days and you’re in for a real foody treat (I hope we aren’t peaking too soon!).

On Saturday 4th September we will be serving our classic cheeseburgers & chips, while Chef Hugh will also be on the BBQ producing the finest Jerk Chicken which will be available from the Snack Shack from 1.30-6.30pm in the form of wraps with spicy BBQ sauce, green salad and slaw. A veggie alternative is also available.

On Sunday 5th September we have our usual hangover-reducing fare of bacon/sausage/egg baps from 9am followed by the finest leftover Jerk Chicken and accompaniments, which will be available from the Snack Shack from late morning onwards.

The prize coffee machine is now in the bar so we are able to offer the finest Italian Mocha bean coffee and Galaxy hot chocolate every evening and at weekends. It is being replaced in the hut by a more traditional machine to ensure our extremely high standards are maintained.

LATEST CLUBHOUSE UPDATES

Changing rooms & showers are back in play and there have been some modifications to the showers – there is a chance you will now get wet enough to actually come out clean rather than just a bit damp! This will, of course, have to be monitored as there is a chance the boiler will not keep up – should this occur I am pretty sure there will be volunteers from Grumpy Corner willing to hose down anyone who needs it.

The marquee is staying for a while longer so we will continue to serve match teas as before. Please, please, please make sure you know when you are expected to eat so we don’t waste food. This will generally be 2 hours after pushback in order to give you all a chance to shower… L1/L2 & M1 slightly longer as they have to do their hair and dress for dinner.

A quick reminder that we are cashless – please inform your officials and visiting teams.

BAR SERVICE HOURS

Bar hours return to normal this week, from 5pm Monday – Thursday and from 3pm on Friday. At weekends, we will be open from 11am on Saturdays and 1pm on Sundays.

STAFF

Goodbye to Sophia Stockden, Tom Naylor-Hill and Emily Powdrell. Sophia and Tom both came from the Snack Shack to the bar and go off to Bristol and Leeds Universities with some great experience under their belt. Emily is off to Birmingham and will be missed as my wing woman in the Snack Shack. Hopefully they’ll all return at some point! Good luck to you all and thank you. This does of course open the door for more lucky, lucky people to work at the finest sports club in Long Ditton:

Snack Shack Staff. Minimum age of 16. The job involves serving customers, and barista and catering (grill & pizza) experience are preferred but not essential. I am a great believer in giving youngsters their first work experience and full training will be provided. Starting wage £7 per hour and hours will predominantly be Sundays from 8.30am – 1.30pm, although flexibility is essential.

Bar Staff. This is ongoing as we get busier and the youngsters go off to Uni / travelling. Our immediate opportunity is for a Senior Bar Tender to help manage weekends. Duties to include assisting the bar & catering team, overseeing functions and ensuring all of our members and visitors have the best possible experience at SHC. Rate of pay is dependent on applicant, experience of hospitality is essential. Would suit a (young at heart) mature person.

Please email me at clubhouse@surbitonhc.com with CV or any questions regarding the above roles.

Exciting news will follow next week including dates for your social calendar.

Finally, with COVID restrictions being eased we ask that you respect each other’s right to space. Mask wearing is optional and whilst we can serve people at the bar we ask that you move away once served – even (or maybe, especially) Grumpy Corner.

Cheers,
Ann
