New Premier League Format Announced by England Hockey

12th August 2020

By Surbiton HC

England Hockey have today announced a revamped ‘split league’ structure in the Men’s and Women’s Premier Divisions for the 2020/21 season.

The Premier Divisions (this year made up of 11 teams owing to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic) will see every team play each other once before Christmas, before splitting into two pools. After the winter break, the Top 6 will play each other once, while the Lower 5 will play each other twice. Results from the first round of fixtures will be carried into the two pools after the division splits.

Premier League matches are due to begin on the weekend of 19th/20th September, although this remains dependent on further progression through England Hockey’s ‘Return to Play’ protocols.

Having been promoted last season, Surbiton Ladies 2s will play in the Women’s National League South, with their first game slated for Saturday 26th September. This league will remain in the ‘traditional’ format.

For full details on England Hockey’s decision-making process on the changes to the Premier Leagues, plus the provisional fixtures programme please see this page.

Exact dates and times for Surbiton HC’s Men’s 1s, Ladies 1s and Ladies 2s National League matches will be confirmed in due course alongside fixtures for our other club teams.
