L1 Battle Against Super Sixes Relegation This Weekend

10th January 2020

By Colin Pike

Surbiton Ladies will be aiming to avoid relegation from the Super Sixes Premier Division at Telford this weekend.

After a disappointing first weekend of competition, Surbiton are bottom of the table having lost all four games, but can save themselves from an immediate return to Division One if they beat Clifton Robinsons and Leicester, also both pointless at the halfway point, as a minimum.

Surbiton lost 10-2 to reigning champions, East Grinstead in their first match, East Grinstead having beaten Buckingham by the same scoreline at the Copper Box last season.

This was followed by a 6-1 defeat by Slough on the Saturday and a 5-3 loss to Holcombe in their first match on Sunday.

The most frustrating defeat came in their last game on Sunday when Sutton Coldfield, the team promoted with Surbiton last season, came from 3-2 down with just two minutes remaining to win 4-3.

Sutton are third behind East Grinstead and Bowdon Hightown, the top two teams boasting maximum points after the first weekend.

Surbiton face Bowdon in their opening match at 12.30 pm on Saturday before playing Buckingham at 4.30 pm.

On Sunday, Surbiton face both of their relegation rivals: Clifton Robinsons in the first match of the day at 9 am and Leicester at 12 noon.

Clifton then play Leicester at 3 pm in what is likely to be another key match as the bottom three teams meet each other to avoid finishing in the bottom two places and lose their place in the top flight.

There will be quarterly score updates via the @SurbitonHC Twitter account for all of Surbiton Ladies and Men's matches over the weekend.
