Interview:
Lottie, Louisa & Meg on Their Return to SHC

2nd August 2020

By Surbiton HC

We are delighted to be welcoming three former Colts back to SHC as members of the Ladies 1s squad from next season.

We talked to Lottie Ross, Louisa Bray and Meg Dowthwaite to find out more about where they’ve been playing over the last few seasons and what made them choose to return home to Surbiton.

Lottie
“I started playing at SHC at eight years old on a Sunday morning and ten years later I played my last season 2016/17 before heading to university. Since leaving SHC I played for Beeston HC for two seasons, helping them to Premier League Promotion in 2017/18. I recently graduated from University of Nottingham, studying Human Geography alongside playing in the Ladies 1s. We reached the BUCS final in my first year, and I captained the team to a BUCS final this season… unfortunately COVID then got in the way! I was also part of the GB EDP squad for two seasons, competing at various U23 tournaments and in the U21 Europeans for England in Valencia last summer.

I always intended to return to SHC having enjoyed many successful seasons as a colt and established some life-long friendships along the way. There is always a buzz about the club and great level of community and camaraderie. I am really looking forward to the 2020/21 season, particularly getting some more Premier League experience and contributing to more success with SHC Ladies 1s!”

Louisa
“I joined Surbiton when I was 13 and last played for the club in the 2016/17 season, with my most recent games in the EHCC competition in Den Bosch, Netherlands. I have been at Durham University for the last three years studying Biological Sciences, while also playing hockey for Durham Uni in BUCS and National League. I have also been part of GB EDP programme for the last three years. With Surbiton being the only club I have played for besides being at uni it seemed an obvious choice to come back to given how successful the club is.

I really enjoyed my time at Surbiton as a colt so I am looking forward to being able to get involved in all aspects of the club now I’m back! I am excited to get back out playing for Surbiton and hope to be able to help continue the success of the team following on from recent years.”

Meg
“I first joined SHC at eight years old in 2006 when my parents coached the 6-12 year olds! My last season was 2012. As well as representing England at U16, U18 and U21 level I played for Wimbledon Ladies 1s for a few seasons from 2013-2016 before I left to go to the University of Michigan in the US to study and play hockey for four years. I’ve just graduated with a degree in Psychology and Business.

I chose to return to Surby as it’s where I feel most at home. I have a lot of childhood friends at the club and it’s also obviously where I first learnt to play hockey! In addition, my whole family has played at SHC with my brother joining at six years old and both of my parents played in the first teams back in the day, so I wanted to carry on the family tradition! In terms of goals for this season, I would love to win the league but I’m also looking forward to getting to know my new team and enjoying the socials!”
