SHC Sirens 1 - 4 Epsom 7s (H)
By Charlotte Coltman
Flobbadob!
Bill and Ben here, peering over the edge of our flower pots at a right old game of hockey! The sun was out, the grass was green, and the Surbiton ladies were ready for a weed-whacking good time against a very "sprouted" and youthful Epsom side.
First Half: A Bit of a Thistle in the Side
Oh, little weed! The first half was a bit like a garden after a storm. The Surbiton defence went all "floppy-wob" early on, and those fresh-faced Epsom youngsters—with their very fast, leafy legs—nipped through to score a quick goal.
Before we could even say "Flobbadob," they got another! 2-0 down. But don't you worry, Surbiton didn't wilt! Jenny did a lovely bit of root-work down the wing and crossed the ball right into the patch, where Sarah was waiting to poke it across the line! 2-1! The crowd went "Saaaa-rah!" Sadly, just before the whistle, the opposition found another gap in the flowerbed and made it 3-1.
Second Half: Solid as a Terra Cotta Pot
The second half was a different story entirely! The Surbiton ladies stood tall and firm, just like prize sunflowers. They were much more solid and only let one more goal slip through, despite the young opposition having very "fresh legs" indeed.
We saw some truly bloom-ing individual efforts that kept the garden tidy:
- Kathryn (the New Seed): A brand new sprout in the team! She played wonderfully for her first outing, showing she’s got great roots already.
- Morven and Ivett: Oh, such speedy legs! They were zooming around the pitch like bumblebees in a hurry, making the Epsom youngsters work for every inch.
- Sophie (The Garden Wall): An epic performance in goal! She stood in that net like a sturdy terra cotta pot, making save after save to keep the score respectable.
The Final Root-Summary
The final score was 4-1 to Epsom, but our Sirens showed they have plenty of grit in their soil. Even if the scoreline grew a bit tall, the second-half performance was as solid as a garden shed!
