Sirens 0 - 1 Old Cranleighan 6s (H)
By Tracey House
Venue: The Colosseum at Sugden Road
The Opening Skirmish: Holding the Gates
The Surbiton Sirens entered the Sugden Road arena ready for a battle of ancient proportions. However, the first half felt like being pressed against the stone walls of the Colosseum by an Old Cranleighans side that utilised quick running and passing to dominate the territory. They managed to breach our fortifications to score a "good goal," leaving the Surbiton faithful looking a bit like they’d just seen a lost puppy. We launched several brave sorties into the enemy D, but their goalkeeper stood as firm as a marble statue, refusing to let any of our shots pass.
The Second Half: Rise of the Centurions
In the second half, the Sirens emerged with a new tactical formation, playing higher and more attacking like a legion on the charge. Our defence worked together with the precision of a Roman phalanx, ensuring the second half remained a tactical 0-0 stalemate. This squad proved they have more fight than a badger in a sack, refusing to let the early snag ruin the whole campaign.
Heroes of the Arena
Caitlin "The Shield-Maiden": In goal, Caitlin was a wall and a lighthouse in a storm. She channeled her inner gladiator by thundering her stick against her pads every time the opposition approached - a psychological warfare tactic designed to make the enemy's hearts give a little flutter.
The Defensive Guard: Our backline stood sturdier than the walls of Rome, working in perfect unison to repel every subsequent assault.
Notable Moments: The Emperor’s Verdict
The highlight of the match - aside from Caitlin’s percussion solo - was the appearance of the first green card of the season. It was issued to an Old Cranleighans player for "unwanted back chat" to the umpire. In a moment of high drama, the official acted with the authority of Caesar, giving a literal "thumbs down" to the dissent and sending the player to the sidelines to contemplate their lack of discipline. It was a wizard show by our squad to keep their cool while the opposition lost theirs!
Final Thoughts
It was a well-deserved display of spirit and a wonderful team effort. While the result wasn't a victory, the Sirens fought with the heart of champions against a spirited Old Cranleighan side. We have retired from the field to recover and prepare for the next battle in the arena
