Women’s 6s 0 - 3 Wanderers 4s (H)
By Tarryn Koen
Our match began with an enthusiastic team cheer for ‘Surbiton’ (or just ‘Niamh’ for one confused member), setting us up for a positive and energetic first half. There’s no ‘I’ in team right?!
Our defenders and goalie, Hutch, worked tirelessly as they stopped multiple on-target goal attempts. However, our opponents have not climbed to the top of the table without reason, and they managed to slip a goal past even brick wall Sammy and Sinead. Still, Tish, Kirst and Sofia pushed on, passing the ball up the pitch and giving the Wanderers a fight.
Becky earned herself her second consecutive POM win through her endless sprinting all over the pitch, executed with purpose and focus. She worked with mids Zoe, Niamh and Courtney to create plenty of goal opportunities. Unfortunately, our forward line (myself, Aashny, Iona and Rhiannon) earned ourselves a collective DOD win for failing to be in the D ready to convert these chances. Captain-in-law Kieran was not impressed!
The second half consisted of two more goals for Wanderers and about six failed short corners for Surbiton. An impressively executed lying down pass from Courtney after a fall; some discipline for the opposition from umpire Val; and a few more more balls into an empty D later, Wanderers secured a 3-0 win. We concluded at teas that it had been a good effort against a strong team, and that a lot of short corner practice is needed. Here’s hoping for a victory next week!
