W1 Second In Super Sixes Premier Division After Week 1
By Colin Pike
Surbiton Women are second in the Super Sixes Premier Division after the first weekend at Repton as they aim to reach Finals Day on 26 January at Derby Arena for the second successive year.
Reigning champions East Grinstead have maximum points after winning all four games with Surbiton two points behind on ten. Buckingham and Sutton Coldfield are both a single point back with newly promoted Holcombe in fifth place on seven, just outside the all-important top four places.
Surbiton followed up their convincing 10-3 opening victory over Harleston Magpies and their 1-1 draw with Holcombe by winning both of Sunday's games by a six goal margin: 6-0 over previously unbeaten Sutton Coldfield and 8-2 against Repton.
Sutton Coldfield had beaten Guildford 5-2 in the first match on Sunday to go into the clash with Surbiton on maximum points, but Surbiton stunned the West Midlands club in the first minute as Amie Hunt scored from open play.
Jordan Homann, who previously played for Leicester in the 2022 Premier Division campaign, East Grinstead a year later and Slough last season, including scoring both goals in the Berkshire club's 3-2 semi-final defeat to East Grinstead, opened her Surbiton account in the 12th minute from a penalty corner to double Surbiton's lead.
Two minutes later, Surbiton led 4-0 with Josie Hippe and Erica Sanders scoring in the 13th and 14th minutes respectively from open play to put last season's runners-up in a commanding position.
Homann struck again two minutes before half time from another set piece, with Surbiton having to settle for just one goal in the final two quarters, Hunt, finishing what she started by completing the scoring from open play in the 29th minute.
Erica Sanders was the captain of Repton's 2023 Championship side, scoring a hat-trick in the 6-1 final victory over Buckingham and in 2025 she came up against her former club, scoring four goals in Surbiton's 8-2 victory.
Again, Amie Hunt scored early to open the scoring with a third minute open play goal, but this time Repton responded immediately, Kat Melson equalising a minute later.
Sanders restored Surbiton's lead in the tenth minute and at the start of the second quarter, current Surbiton captain, Alice Sharp netted her first goal of the campaign to extend her side's lead to 3-1.
Sanders made the score 4-1 on the stroke of half time before completing her second hat-trick of the weekend in the 28th minute. Before Repton could react, Homann converted a penalty corner a minute later to leave Repton trailing 6-1 at the end of the third quarter.
Homann scored Surbiton's seventh goal with another penalty corner conversion in the 34th minute and although Rosie Bowman responded in the 35th minute from another penalty corner, Sanders scored her fourth goal of the game and eleventh goal of the weekend from the penalty spot to complete Surbiton's unbeaten weekend.
Sanders is the division's top scorer at the halfway point with East Grinstead's Biba Mills on eight and Guildford's Kerryn Swanepoel on seven.
Surbiton return to Repton next weekend and face the team they beat in last season's semi-final at Derby Arena, Buckingham in their first match on Saturday (11 Jan) at 1330.
Surbiton then have a Surrey derby against Guildford at 1830 before a rematch with last season's champions, East Grinstead at 1200 on Sunday. Slough are Surbiton's final opposition at 1500 on Sunday.
