Sirens 4 - 0 Old Cranleighan 7s (H)
By Tracey House
Team: Caitlin (GK), Tracey, Andrie, Lisa, Claire J, Victoria W, Surge, Nao, Joanna P, Claire T, Alexa, Jo, Tessa and Victoria T
It was a cold and damp early Saturday morning at Surbiton and we were meeting our local rivals and friends OCs. It was OC Pam's Birthday (Tarek’s mum) and she was hoping for a favourable result but Sirens were not ready to be that nice, even for Pam.
We were lucky to have Caitlin in goal, Andrie from the Pumas and Alexa, having just joined Surbiton, was up front.
Marlijn and Wendy were umpiring the game and the flute whistles were at the ready.
We started quickly and assertively, attacking the D and within six minutes Alexa had scored our first goal. OCs attempted a few forward movements but the defence were tight and well organised.
The mids worked tirelessly and with more penetrating passes it wasn’t long before Jo was on the end of a quick attack, turned and scored her first goal of the season. Everyone was delighted and the Sirens were 2-0 up. Two further short corners resulted in Surge (injector) being sent up field when first Tessa and then Nao entered the D before the ball had. Oh dear Nao - winner of the Wally Wig of the Week!
Half time was a time to calm and reflect on the positive play, and that Wendy wouldn't accept any stick hooking of players!!
The second half was more even with OCs being very close with some corners and Claire J receiving a ball on her thigh - ouch! But the goals kept coming and the next was a storming run from Victoria T for number three. The rain started and we were looking forward to teas back in the clubhouse. But Sirens continued to defend strongly and attack quickly. Our last goal came in the final four minutes from Nao, who had been tenacious all game.
Final score 4-0 and we move up to 10th in the table. A great team effort.
Teas were amazing and Pam even provided us with birthday cake.
