Sirens 1 - 2 Mitcham 1s (A)

Overcast conditions made for a cold start for the women’s Siren’s team against Mitcham. An evenly matched first 15 minutes, however Mitcham managed to get one in past the keeper after some swift sticks in the D following a short corner. Sirens carried momentum from the restart and pushed up the pitch, finding gaps in the Mitcham defence. Tessa found space and collected the perfect through ball right on the end of her stick. Laura ran from the left wing into the D, collected the ball and made a swift hit into the bottom right of the Mitcham goal (23 minutes), her first goal for Sirens and cheers rang out across the pitch. Going into half time it was 1-1.

Second half again showed huge promise from the Sirens with some great movement through the middle, deftly supported by the backs during free hits. Several chances in the box but we just couldn’t get a second past the Mitcham defence. Mitcham hustled for a second goal around halfway through the second half after some back and forth in the D. 

Sirens heads stayed high and we continued to break into the opposition D. Sadly we just couldn’t break the final defensive line and the scoreline remained 2-1 to Mitcham at the final whistle.

Great play from the whole team, the defence worked hard to intercept the Mitcham counter attacks and several short corners, the mids ran their legs off getting the ball from the backs and running it up so the forwards could find space to get into the D and attempt on goal.  Today, a scoreline that doesn’t reflect the excellent game play, but everyone came away smiling. What a great group of women to play hockey with.
