That was a bit of a nail-biter, wasn't it? Surbiton Sirens took the short trip over to Epsom today and, bless them, they really put a shift in, even if the final score wasn't exactly what we were hoping for. A 2-1 loss it was, which is a bit of a shame, but honestly, there’s a lot to be proud of.
The Match
Surbiton made a solid start and our goal was lovely: Cleo gave a cracking pass in, and Louise - who was clearly feeling fresh, thank goodness she didn't join the ‘Back to Hockey' session instead - got hold of it and slotted it right past their keeper. That's the stuff! Epsom equalised after one of those moments where the ball just seems to be having a wander. A loose player - I bet her mum was shouting "get rid of it, love!" - poked it in from right behind our brilliant goalie. Half time it was 1-1.
We started brightly but Epsom had some young legs. Their second came from a short corner, which always feels a bit like having to do the washing up after Sunday dinner - unavoidable but annoying.
Shout Outs
I've got to give a big round of applause to Annie in goal. Honestly, the saves she pulled off were absolutely stonking! She was flying about like a moth in a lampshade. And she rushed straight from her 7s game to play for us, which is dedication you don't often see. Our defensive line was as strong as my resolve not to eat a whole packet of biscuits - which, let me tell you, is very strong. Louise was brilliant with a cracking cross, too.
A massive thank you to Cuddy and Cleo for helping out from the Pumas squad. It’s always lovely when the family chips in. And finally, a special mention for Claire J, who was a proper good sport and played in practically every position on the pitch - a real versatile player, like a little black dress that goes with everything.
We’ll dust ourselves off, get the kettle on, and go again next week! You did good, girls.
