SHC Sirens 1 - 4 SHC Wolves (H)
By Laura Elsworth
This may be the last game of the season where teams are complaining it’s hot - we made the most of a glorious afternoon of sunshine and had a Surbiton vs Surbiton scoreboard on Pitch 1. A fierce rivalry was forecast alongside the sunshine, but it was a fantastic game with both teams behaving impeccably and complimenting one another’s great game play.
The first goal went to the Wolves with a smart strike in the D, followed by a second Wolves goal, taking them 2-0 up on the scoreboard at half time.
The second half started strong for the Sirens and a stellar run from Sarah from the halfway line all the way to the D filled the Sirens with hope, Surge and Laura poised in the D anticipating a pass in. Sarah took a strike and it deflected off a Wolves player up into the air… Surge has clearly been getting ninja tips from her sons as her stick went from ground to overhead quicker than any normal person’s reflexes, the ball shot over the keeper and hit the back of the net. A Goal of the Season contender, and it’s only October.
Coach Katie Curtis on the sidelines was very impressed with the finish. Some further fancy footwork around the D and lovely runs of play from Sirens, but we just couldn’t find the backboard. The Wolves won a few short corners and an unfortunate deflection from the defence saw Wolves go 3-1 up, followed up five mintes later with another goal.
Wolves took the win but the Sirens can give themselves a firm pat on the back for creating chances in the second half and keeping the momentum up. A great game between the two Surbiton teams this week.
